Hidden in the Hollows

Some of my sweetest memories were made in my great grandmother's yard on Easter Sunday. My four cousins and I would tumble out of the house after the meal — after we had reflected on the reason for the season, eaten until we could barely move, and watched the adults disappear outside with grocery bags full of dollar store prizes and more plastic eggs than any yard had a right to hold. Some eggs had candy. Some had quarters that felt like a fortune at that age. And the golden ones — those were the ones you ran for — each one holding a number that matched a prize waiting inside. Hard boiled dyed eggs were scattered in there too, which we only discovered were missing once we came back inside and caught our great grandfather and grandfather eating them straight out of our baskets without a single apology. We counted our quarters, unwrapped our candy, claimed our prizes, and then flew back outside to play while the adults settled in for bingo. That yard, those eggs, and those people are the reason I made Hidden in the Hollows.
